College Basketball Betting – Notre Dame Fighting Irish at North Carolina Tar Heels
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been fighting an uphill battle since their star player went down. But they have an opportunity to capture their third victory in a row on Monday night as they take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in a game that will begin at 7 PM ET at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. This is an ESPN game, and while BetAnySports customers are watching it, they can place wagers in real-time using the facilities of Live Betting Ultra.
Notre Dame’s season changed in early January when Bonzie Colson, the pre-season All-American, went down with a foot injury that required surgery. There is the possibility that he could be back if this team makes it into the NCAA Tournament, but the problem is getting there without him. Colson was averaging 21.4 points and 10.4 rebounds this season, and he consistently tallied at least 25% of Notre Dame’s points.
The Irish lost seven games in a row before coming up with wins over Boston College and Florida State over the last two. The victory over the Seminoles was one of their better results of the season, along with a win over nationally -ranked Wichita State in the championship game of the Maui invitational. Notre Dame has actually been ranked as high as #5 in the country this season, but at this point it’s going to be a struggle making a case for an at-large bid, unless they can get very hot.
A win over North Carolina would certainly go a long way toward supplying an argument to the Selection Committee. The Tar Heels had lost three of their previous four games going into the first of two meetings with Duke on Thursday night, and they defeated the Blue Devils in an effort that included only two turnovers and 20 offensive rebounds. Then on Saturday they were able to turn around and defeat North Carolina State 96-89. This may be a dangerous letdown situation for them, and Notre Dame comes in with some momentum and confidence.
In the college basketball betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, North Carolina is solidly favored:
North Carolina Tar Heels -9.5
Notre Dame Fighting Irish +9.5
Over 150.5 points -110
Under 150.5 points -110
North Carolina is a team led by veterans, which is kind of unusual among top-rung college programs. They were fortunate to be able to return some key performers in last year’s national championship team, and that includes Luke Maye, the junior forward averaging over 18 points and 10 rebounds per game, who stood out the first time these two teams played on January 13 in South Bend. Maye had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and in a game that included 24 lead changes, the Tar Heels prevailed 69-68. Notre Dame was missing both Colson and Matt Farrell in that one, and to give you an indication as to how important Farrell is, he hit for 28 points, including six out of ten from three-point range, against Florida State.
One of the things that characterizes the Tar Heels as their relentless attack on the boards, as they ranked third in the nation in offensive rebounding percentage. Along with everything else, Colson was a fierce defensive rebounder, even at 6-5, so the Irish will have to make up the difference from somewhere. And the last two trips to Tobacco Road for Mike Bray’s team have not been pleasant at all, as they went down quietly to both Duke and North Carolina State, trailing at one juncture by 30 points in each of those games. However, they might have caught North Carolina in one of their rough spots, coming off these two games against bitter rivals. Since Notre Dame can slow the pace (322nd in Adjusted Tempo), they can shorten the game. We would recommend taking the points with Notre Dame in this one.
