Giants vs Rockies – 5/9/19 MLB Pick, Odds, and Predictions

San Francisco Giants vs Colorado Rockies MLB Baseball Thursday, May 9, 2019 (3:10pm et) Current Odds: Rockies -140, Total Runs 9.5

Colorado Rockies right-hander Jon Gray was eager to continue his resurgence against the San Francisco Giants.

First the weather interfered as Wednesday’s game was postponed due to rain in Denver.

Then the Rockies made the decision to skip Gray’s turn, going instead with lefty Kyle Freeland for the Thursday afternoon meeting with the Giants.

Weather permitting, as Thursday’s forecast calls for more precipitation and temperatures in the low 40s, Freeland (2-5, 5.90 ERA) will remain on schedule. The Rockies hope their Opening Day starter returns to form after struggling in the two games since returning from a left middle finger blister.

Freeland’s worst outing of the season came last Saturday, when he surrendered career highs of eight runs and three home runs in a dismal six innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Freeland has now served up eight home runs in seven starts and the Rockies as a team have given up 51 homers, third worst in the National League.

“His fastball is still reading out at 90 or 91, which is his normal. Occasionally he’ll pop at 92,” Rockies manager Bud Black told the Denver Post. “For me, the ball is just a little bit elevated, out over the plate. His strength a lot of times is when he’s pitching well inside to righties, hard in on the corner, and the ability to get the ball down and away. The last couple of starts, that hasn’t happened enough during the course of his outings.”

Freeland, however, has had success against the Giants over his career. He is 5-3 with a 2.87 ERA and 32 strikeouts in nine starts against them, although he did lose his only meeting with the Giants this season.

Back on April 13, he was tagged with the loss after pitching five innings before leaving with a finger blister. He allowed three runs on nine hits.

Freeland is now set to face San Francisco left-hander Derek Holland, who was activated from the 10-day injured list before his scheduled start on Wednesday. Holland had been sidelined due to a bone bruise on his left index finger, an injury he sustained while practicing bunting.

He has started five career games against the Rockies and is 1-3 with a 6.18 ERA in those outings.

His one win came at Coors Field, but he has a 10.00 ERA there and also took a loss in one of his two starts in Denver.

Holland would be happy if San Francisco’s offense duplicated its effort from a 14-4 win Tuesday in the series opener. The Giants homered three times and racked up 16 hits in the victory.

“You know what, you have to be encouraged,” manager Bruce Bochy said after the Tuesday game. “These guys are starting to see the ball better, they’re swinging better. … I think when that happens, it can make everybody else better. Knock on wood, that’s what’s going to happen.”

The Rockies are just 6-10 at Coors Field in 2019 and have lost three of their first four on the current homestand that concludes with a three-game visit by the San Diego Padres this weekend.

The Giants head home for a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds after the finale in Denver.
