Tampa Bay Rays at NY Yankees – 7/27/17 MLB Preview and Pick
The Tampa Bay Rays begin an important weekend set against the AL East rival New York Yankees this Thursday night in a 7:05 p.m. (ET) start at Yankees Stadium in Game 1 of an extended four-game series with major playoff implications for both teams.
Tampa Bay at New York Game Preview
Tuesday night’s 5-4 victory against Baltimore as -118 home favorites was the Rays’ first win in their last six games and just their third in the last nine. This slide has Tampa Bay 2.5 games back in the AL East title race at 52-49. They will face the Orioles one more time at home this Wednesday before heading on the road to New York with a 24-26 road record this year. The total went OVER BetAnySports’ closing 8.5-run line in Tuesday’s win after staying UNDER in six of their previous eight games.
Tampa Bay will go with Chris Archer as its starter on Thursday. The right-hander looked sharp in his last start despite picking up the loss by holding Texas to one earned run on four hits in seven innings pitched. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in each of his last five starts to lower his ERA on the year to 3.77 with a 1.24 WHIP.
The Yankees improved to 5-2 in their last seven outings with Tuesday’s 4-2 win at home against Cincinnati as -156 favorites with BetAnySports. They are now 52-46 overall and just one game in back of Boston for the lead in the AL East. New York has gone 27-17 at home this season and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of its last seven home games. The Yankees have been opened as heavy -223 favorites for Wednesday’s game against the Reds.
Look for CC Sabathia to get the start for New York in this series opener. The left-hander is 9-3 this season through 16 starts and his ERA stands at 3.44 with a 1.28 WHIP. Last Friday he held Seattle to one earned run on four hits in five innings to pick up the win. This followed a six-inning gem against Boston on July 16 when he held the Red Sox scoreless on just two hits.
Tampa Bay at New York Free Game Prediction
This should be a great matchup on the mound between two hot starters, but I am leaning towards New York taking the early lead in this series with the win. The Yankees’ bats are starting to click again, while the Rays’ lineup has been inconsistent at best since the All Star break.
