The Divisional Round of the NFC playoffs gets underway this Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field with the Atlanta Falcons going on the road to tangle with the Philadelphia Eagles in a 4:35 p.m. start on NBC.

Atlanta at Philadelphia Game Preview

Atlanta closed as a six-point road underdog against the Los Angeles Rams last Saturday in the Wild Card Round and it went on to win that game 26-13. The total stayed UNDER BetAnySports’ closing 48-point line and it has now stayed UNDER in its last six games. The Falcons improved to 11-6 straight-up on the year with an 8-9 record against the spread. Even with the cover on the road they are just 3-6 ATS on the road this season. Their record ATS when closing as favorites is 6-7.

The veteran leadership of Matt Ryan at quarterback paid some deep dividends against the Rams with a solid completion rate of 70 percent on 30 passing attempts for 218 yards and a score. The Falcons also ran the ball well with 124 yards on 39 carries. The main reason why Atlanta advanced to the next round was the play of a defense that closed out the regular season ranked eighth in the league in points allowed (19.7).

The Eagles ended the regular season at 13-3 SU to claim the top seed in the NFC, but after failing to cover in three of their last four games they dropped to 10-6 ATS. Philadelphia did go 7-1 SU at home this season with a 5-3 record ATS and the total stayed UNDER BetAnySports’ closing line in four of its last five home games. Its record ATS this season when closing as an underdog was an even 2-2 with the total going OVER in three of those games.

The weight of avoiding a ‘one and done’ as the top seed in the NFC falls squarely on the shoulders of backup quarterback Nick Foles, who has the unenviable task of filling the big shoes of Carson Wentz, who was lost for the season with a torn ACL. To get past the Falcons this Saturday afternoon, Philadelphia is going to need a huge effort from a running game that was third in the NFL in yards gained behind a trio of solid backs.

The early money is pouring in on Atlanta with a heavy consensus in the Falcons’ favor, but I am riding the current trends heavily favoring the underdogs in this year’s playoffs. Wentz was a huge loss, but there is still a reason why Philadelphia is the top seed in the NFC and Atlanta came into the postseason at No. 6.
