In a huge showdown in the NFC South to close out the regular season, the Carolina Panthers travel to Mercedes-Benz Stadium this Sunday afternoon to tangle with the Atlanta Falcons. Game time on FOX is set for 1 p.m.

Carolina at Atlanta Game Preview

The Panthers were able to clinch a spot in the NFC playoffs with Sunday’s 22-19 squeaker over Tampa Bay as 10-point home favorites on BetAnySports’ closing line. The straight-up win moved their record to 11-4, but they fell back to 9-5-1 against the spread. Carolina has gone 5-2 ATS on the road this season and the total has gone OVER in four of its last six road games.

Cam Newton continues to make plays when he has to such as his game winning two-yard touchdown run on Sunday against Tampa Bay with less than a minute to play. He led the team in rushing with 52 yards on 14 carries while also completing 16-of-25 passing attempts for 160 yards. Carolina’s defense once again rose to the occasion and on the year this unit has held opposing teams to an average of 20.3 points per game.

While Sunday’s 23-13 loss to New Orleans as a five-point road underdog did not help the cause, Atlanta still controls its own playoff destiny at 9-5 SU and a victory on Sunday would lock up the other wild card spot in the NFC. After failing to cover in that loss, the Falcons are 6-9 ATS overall. They have gone 4-3 ATS at home this season and the total has stayed UNDER BetAnySports’ closing line in their last four games.

To come out on top against another bitter division rival this Sunday, veteran quarterback Matt Ryan is going to have to elevate his play while the Falcons also find a way to move the ball on the ground. Atlanta is ranked 10th in the NFL in both passing yards and rushing yards, but it was held to a combined 331 yards in last Sunday’s loss.

Atlanta has won seven of its last nine home games against Carolina both SU and ATS. I am going to ride that trend again in this matchup with the Falcons coming away with another victory against the Panthers at home both SU and ATS.
