Dallas Cowboys at Arizona Cardinals – 9/25/17 NFL Pick and Prediction
It might be enough to say that the Dallas Cowboys simply had an off day last week, as they were bludgeoned to death by the Denver Broncos. But for some observers, this might be a sign of things to come for them, as maybe opposing defenses are little more “hip” to what Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott can do. On Monday night, the Cowboys will face off against the Arizona Cardinals, often somewhat of a disappointing start, and they meet at 8:30 PM ET at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. ESPN will televise the game, and BetAnySports customers will have the opportunity to place wagers even while the game is in progress, using the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra.
To say that Arizona had a hard time with the Indianapolis Colts, a team that was down to its third-string quarterback, would be understating things. Yes, they were on the road at Lucas Oil Stadium, and yes, it was their second straight trip back east. But they probably should not have been pushed to overtime, where they struggled to a 16-13 victory. And Carson Palmer, the veteran quarterback, has not played well, and has caught the ire of head coach Bruce Arians. We understand that Arians is somewhat of a psychologist, so let’s not conclude that Palmer isn’t in the doghouse just yet. But his numbers are not good – he’s completed only 55% of his passes with four interceptions, and he has been sacked five times. We can place some of the blame on the Arizona offensive line, which has not done a good job of opening up holes for running backs either.
In the Monday night football betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, Dallas, the road team, is favored:
Dallas Cowboys -2.5 (-120)
Arizona Cardinals +2.5 (+100)
Over 46.5 points -110
Under 46.5 points -110
If you’re looking for a shocker, how about this – Ezekiel Elliott, who led the NFL in rushing last season as a rookie, was limited to just eight yards in nine carries by the Denver defense. Considering that after his NFL debut, he had run for at least 80 yards and every game as a professional, that represents a huge difference indeed. His inability to run against the Bronco front caused Prescott to go to the air 50 times, and that is not necessarily what Dallas wants to do. Through the first two games, Prescott has averaged only 5.7 yards per attempt, and he has been looking for the short routes, which explains why tight end Jason Witten is by far the team’s leading receiver, with 17 catches for 156 yards.
BetAnySports patrons will be watching this Monday night game will have to keep an eye on who Arizona gives the ball to. Remember that David Johnson was knocked out of action in the opener, and Chris Johnson, a former NFL rushing leader, was re-signed after he was cut in the preseason. He had 11 carries last week, but as a team Arizona is averaging just three yards a pop. We’ll see how successful they are in creating advantageous down-and-distance situations.
Obviously Dallas is the team that would appear to have more offensive upside, because of the presence of the better offensive line. But one matchup that could be critical here involves Patrick Peterson, the All-Pro cornerback, who might be going man-to-man for much of the time with Dez Bryant. If Prescott can’t hit Bryant, it will once again be a steady diet of short routes to people like Witten. Elliott has caught nine passes through the first two games, but only for a total of 50 yards.
Neither one of these teams has done a very good job stopping the opponent on third down – Dallas has thus far yielded 48% success, while Arizona has allowed 47%.
