Kansas City at New England- NFL Week 1 Thursday Night Game Preview and Pick

BetAnySports Pointspread: New England -8

BetAnySports Total Line: 47.5

A new season of football in the NFL kicks things off this Thursday night with the Kansas City Chiefs going on the road to face the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots in an 8:30 p.m. (ET) start at Gillette Stadium. The game will be available nationally on NBC.

Kansas City at New England Game Preview

The Chiefs are coming off their third run to the playoffs in four years with Andy Reid at the helm as head coach after posting a straight-up 12-4 record in the regular season to claim the AFC West Division title. They went 9-7 against the spread during that run and the total stayed UNDER in 10 of their 16 regular season games. Kansas City was able to cover the spread in its last six road games in 2016.

Veteran quarterback Alex Smith may have to rely a bit more heavily on his ability to move the ball through the air on Thursday night in light of a season-ending knee injury to the Chiefs’ leading rusher Spencer Ware. Kansas City will also need a strong effort from a defense that was one of the best in the NFL last season when it came to points allowed (19.4).

Everyone knows New England’s story in 2016 including one of the biggest comebacks in Super Bowl history in its 34-28 season-ending victory against Atlanta. The Patriots were also one of the league’s top betting teams with a 16-3 record ATS in the 2016 Super Bowl run. They covered the spread in their last eight games and the total went OVER BetAnySports’ closing line in five of their last seven outings.

Tom Brady will be under center for New England on Thursday night, but he will be missing his top target in the passing game with Julian Edelman out for the season due to injury. The Patriots are another team that did an excellent job at keeping opposing teams out of the end zone last season with a points-allowed average of 15.6.

Kansas City at New England Free Game Prediction

In an early season battle between two of the top teams in the AFC, I am going to default to defense over offense on Thursday night. I would still lean towards New England at home, but my ‘best bet’ pick in this contest is the UNDER on BetAnySports’ 47.5-point total line.
