NFL Odds & Preview – Los Angeles Chargers at New York Giants
The Los Angeles Chargers have most certainly experienced their share of tough breaks on the way to a 0-4 record. It’s conceivable that this team could be 3-1 right now, but they have lost three tough ones in the waning moments. But they have a pretty good history is a road underdog, and will take that to the Meadowlands as they face off against the New York Giants in a game that begins at 1 PM ET on Sunday at MetLife Stadium East Rutherford, NJ. This game can be seen on a regional basis through CBS, and BetAnySports customers can place wagers on it while they watt, using the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra.
There is no doubt that the Chargers have had all kinds of problems establishing advantage at their new domicile, the StubHub Center in Carson, where reportedly most of the crowd last week. was rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles, who beat them 26-24. What might be a little more damaging to this team is that they can’t run the ball. At this has gone directly against the supposed philosophy of new head coach Anthony Lynn, who said this club going to pound the rock. So far, no go; Melvin Gordon had 22 yards on the ground last week, in the Chargers have only 270 as a team.
Is a possible that head coach Ben McAdoo is in hot water in the Big Apple? No one expected the Giants to get off to a 0-4 start, and these last two defeats and been heartbreaking, coming on a field goal by the other team on the last play of the game. But what we see with the Giants is another team that can run the football; they have even fewer rushing yards than the Chargers, and they throw the ball higher percentage of the time.
Obviously there is that link between Phillip Rivers and Eli Manning, as Manning refused to go to the Chargers, who had the first pick in the 2004 draft and used it on him. When the Giants picked Rivers, the two teams made a trade, and the rest is history. Both of them could conceivably wind up in the Hall of Fame. But right now, all either one of them wants is that first victory of the season.
In the NFL odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Giants are the favorites
New York Giants -3 (-120)
Los Angeles Chargers +3 (+100)
Over 45 points -110
Under 45 points -110
The Giants’ offensive line has not allowed many sacks of Manning (only eight), but they haven’t opened up holes for these running backs to run through. Paul Perkins and Orleans Darkwa have tried, without success, and now rookie Wayne Gallman has entered the picture. He had 42 yards against Tampa Bay last week in the 25-25 defeat. So we’ll see what happens from that perspective.
Odell Beckham is averaging just ten yards a catch, and Brandon Marshall is averaging less than nine. At least he started to catch some passes – 14 of them, in fact, over the last two games.
The Chargers have to get some pressure on Manning. They’ve gotten 5.5 sacks from Melvin Ingram, but Joey Bosa is stuck at 2.5. They expect a little bit more out of him.
Giants might be able to move this ball along a little bit, especially as the Chargers have permitted 46.4% on third down conversions. But maybe the big disappointment has been the fact that the Giants aren’t flipping the field with their defensive unit. They have only eight sacks, which is not projected to be too many by the end of the season, and they have yet register an interception. Considering the talent they have in the defensive backfield, that is thoroughly unexpected.
The Chargers have suffered 19 of their last 27 losses by seven points or less, and they are 23-11-1 ATS in their last 35 games as a road underdog. Maybe that means something here; maybe it doesn’t, but we know that they have played almost well enough to win on a few occasions. These teams have combined to score just seven points in the first quarter this season, so perhaps the Chargers can keep things close into the second half and will see what happens from there. No confidence in this Giants team, so we’ll take the points.
