NFL Predictions – Buffalo Bills at Carolina Panthers
Some might say that the Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills both caught a break last week, as they were not challenged by the most dynamic offenses in the world.
Some might say that the Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills both caught a break last week, as they were not challenged by the most dynamic offenses in the world. On Sunday they will try to offer a stiff challenge to each other as they meet at Bank of America Stadium in a game that begins at 1 PM ET. The Bills were conducting something of a fire sale during the pre-season, but they were able to play a team in the opening week that was selling off even more players – the New York Jets. And they limited the impotent Jets to just eleven first downs on the day, in the process intercepting Josh McCown, New York’s stale quarterback, twice. And the Bills only had to throw the ball 40 of the time.
The Panthers easily turned back the San Francisco 49ers, holding them to only 217 yards. And they also did not need to fill the air with footballs to win a 23-3 verdict, as Cam Newton completed just 14 passes. Christian McCaffrey made his NFL debut, and he is somebody they are undoubtedly going to be relying on heavily.
In the football odds at BetAnySports upon which we will make our NFL predictions,. the Panthers are the favorites:
Carolina Panthers -7 (-115)
Buffalo Bills +7 (-105)
Over 43 points -110
Under 43 points -110
Let’s start out by mentioning that Sean McDermott, Buffalo’s new head coach, was the defensive coordinator for Carolina and knows Newton quite well. And Newton, who was the league’s MVP two seasons ago, is coming off rotator cuff surgery. It would be a fair statement to say that he has not rounded into form quite yet. McDermott has a mobile QB as well with the Bills, and Tyrod Taylor will likely have to do his share of improvising to deal with Carolina’s pressure.
The Bills primarily like to pound the football, and they have capable people to do it with – namely LeSean McCoy, who had 110 yards on the ground last week – but BetAnySports customers must consider that Carolina has a set of linebackers as good as any in the league, with the likes of Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis and Shaq Thompson.
There is some doubting the commitment to winning on the part of Bills’ management, since they unloaded two of the team’s best players through trades during training camp – Sammy Watkins to the Rams and Ron Darby to the Eagles. But there is no doubt at all that McDermott’s familiarity with the Panthers’ personnel is going to be an advantage here. And maybe he can outsmart Mike Shula, Carolina’s offensive coordinator.
There is a certain residue that is left over from Rex Ryan’s tenure, and it involves aggressiveness on the part of the Buffalo “D.” This will test Newton, who may not be able to get the ball down the field as well as he would like. The Bills could probably do enough to keep this game close.
