NFL Predictions – New York Giants at Oakland Raiders
As the New York Giants get together with the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, it might be a little more substantial than just a match wherel we are seeking the “lesser of two evils.” The Raiders are suddenly contending in the AFC West, while the Giants have produced an awful lot of drama this past week. These teams get together at 4:25 PM ET at the Oakland Coliseum, and while Fox Network televises it on a regional basis, BetAnySports customers will have the opportunity to place wagers in real time as they check out the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra.
The Giants are obviously completely out of the playoff race by now, sporting a 2-9 straight-up record (4-7 ATS), but what has shocked a lot of people is that coach Ben McAdoo – and we might add Giants ownership – is reacting in the way many organizations react when they have no hope left. That is, they are making a change at the quarterback position. Eli Manning had the longest streak of consecutive starts of any active quarterback, but that is going to be broken on Sunday as Geno Smith takes over.
Co-owner John Mara has expressed that this idea, to a considerable extent, came from him, although in a different format. Manning was approached with the idea of having other quarterbacks come in and take the reins in the second halves of games, but he balked at that, suggesting instead that the team might as well start somebody else. So that’s exactly what will happen. Smith has not necessarily done much to engender a lot of confidence in his career, as he executed poorly and was a poor leader with the New York Jets, and most people figured that Davis Webb, the third-round draft pick out of California, would have been the choice, as the Giants weighed the possibilities in advance of the NFL Draft, where they might have one of the first three or four picks. Webb will probably come on over the last three or four games of the season, but not at the moment.
In the odds at BetAnySports upon which we will make our NFL predictions for Sunday, the Raiders are the solid favorites:
Oakland Raiders -8.5
New York Giants +8.5
Over 42 points -110
Under 42 points -110
McAdoo, who helped the Giants get to the playoffs last season in his first year as head coach, has taken an awful lot of heat for this decision, and the guy who was promoted with the idea that he was an “offensive guru” has seen his team score 19 points over the last two games. One of those games was a standout defensive performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, in which the Giants prevailed 12-9 in overtime. Last week against the Washington Redskins, they gained only 170 yards from scrimmage.
Smith takes over a team that is minus a lot of weaponry, including wide receivers Odell Beckham and Brandon Marshall, and Sterling Shepherd has been plagued by migraine headaches that have caused him to miss the last couple of games. The ground attack appears to be a “part-time” proposition, so in simple terms, the Giants are very challenged on the offensive side.
Defensively this team has played well in the last couple of weeks, but Janoris Jenkins, who was part of that mini-revival, is now out of action with an injury. Defense is not the strong suit of the Raiders, although they didn’t do too badly last week against the Denver Broncos, holding them to just 66 yards on their first 35 place from scrimmage. Granted, they still only have one interception on the year, and last week’s opposing quarterback was the inexperienced Paxton Lynch, but seriously, is Geno Smith on a much higher level than that? Well, we will find out, won’t we?
