Thursday Night NFL Betting – Seattle Seahawks at Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks put on one exciting display and one very drab effort last season, and things are a little different, at least on Arizona side right now, as these two teams meet up to the Thursday night NFL matchup, beginning at 8:25 PM ET at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. It will be a dual broadcast, carried on NBC and on the NFL Network, and if you are a BetAnySports customer, you can place wagers in real time when you take advantage of what is available through Live Betting Ultra.
The Seahawks are coming off a very disappointing defeat, as they lost 17-14 to Washington at home. There didn’t seem to be a lot of problems moving the football, as the team had 437 yards of total offense, compared to just 244 for the Redskins. But Russell Wilson was intercepted twice and the Seahawks just didn’t get the plays when they needed them. They come into this game with a record of 5-3 straight-up and 3-5 against the football pointspread. And they are looking up at the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West.
The Cardinals have had a troubled season, but they are still not out of the race yet. At 4-4 straight-up (2-6 ATS) they are obviously still in striking distance, and this is the first of two meetings with the Seahawks, with the other one taking place on New Year’s Eve in the season finale. Of course, Arizona’s going without quarterback Carson Palmer, so they have to make things happen with Drew Stanton, the long-time backup who completed just 15 out of his 30 passes against the San Francisco 49ers last week.
In the Thursday night NFL betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, Seattle is favored on the road:
Seattle Seahawks -6
Arizona Cardinals +6
Over 40 points -110
Under 40 points -110
The reason the Cardinals were able to beat San Francisco 20-10 was that Adrian Peterson broke out with another outstanding effort on the ground, with 159 yards. But there’s a tremendous difference between the capability of the Niners’ stop unit and that of the Seahawks, so we would not necessarily expect a cakewalk for Peterson in this one. That would put additional pressure on Stanton, who knows the offensive scheme but does not necessarily have the ability to get the most out of it. For example, how well can he connect with Larry Fitzgerald, who is by far the team’s leading receiver with 50 catches for 564 yards? One thing that might make things perhaps a little “easier” for Arizona is that Earl Thomas, the outstanding safety for Seattle, is out with a hamstring injury.
But let’s remember that this defense on an overall basis has played very well. They have allowed opposing quarterbacks just a 77 rating, and only 58% completions. BetAnySports patrons might expect them to concentrate on stopping the run first, rushing four people and making sure that one of Arizona’s speedy receivers doesn’t burn them long.
One move that the Seahawks may before the trade deadline that definitely constitutes an upgrade was the acquisition of left tackle Duane Brown, who had made the Pro Bowl as a member of the Houston Texans. This team needed something more solid on the offensive line, especially when it comes to protecting Wilson. And it was a pretty good sign that Seattle had 148 yards on the ground last week against the Redskins. At the same time, we know enough to recognize that they can’t be counted on to do that on a week by week basis.
On balance, we’re not sure Arizona can meet with enough success running the football to keep Seattle’s defense “honest.” At the same time, this is a difficult number. But we will lay it, because if one team stands to be shut down completely, it is more likely the Cards’ side.
